chipper constipation

I just bought a old Olathe chipper (early '70s vintage, 12" with a 6-cyl ford motor: terrifying) which chomps brush prodigously, but the output chute plugs almost immediately. After cleaning it the last time, I got about 1 gal. of chips which flew out, then nothing; the rest are packed in the chute.

Anybody have experience with these monsters, and/or any ideas how to keep the flow going?

Make sure the chute is clean and shiney. The chipper may have been used to chew up some green and sappy wood and got the chute gummed up.
A blower used for haylage will do the same thing. We used to drizzle in a pail of water per load to take the gum out of the pipe and especially the curved chute at the top. If it is pine gum it might require more drasic measures. Be safe! Ed

Is there rust on the sides of the chute? Wouldn't take much -- maybe a good coat of paint would smooth it enough to get stuff flowing.

Does it have a "air boost" to the chipper? Could it be clogged?
