our home recently burgularized. looks like i will be putting in a security system of some kind. i would like to use a wireless system that i can install. i have looked at a smarthome catalog, they have this type. i would really like some advice from anyone that has installed one. better brands, reliability etc. i would use motion sensors around in the house. thanks to all who might help.

Go the X10 route if you want to save $$$, I've got a monitored system in our house and the X10 system in my pole barn, it works great, easy to install and no monthly monitoring bills. Keep an eye on their website (x10.com), their security package goes on sale every couple of days. I also added 4 low light cameras hooked up to a security VCR - can record up to 40 days without changing the tape, you can see if someone has been by when you're not around. One more thing, if you don't have them already you might want to add motion sensor lights to your outside. I learned about this stuff the hard way, never thought I'd be bothered living where I do, but there are people that use our comfort to take advantage of us.

I have a combination of motion detectors and sensor switches. I have the motion detectors in rooms and places where no one is likely to be walking around at night. Also, if you have pets and go out and arm the system, a dog or cat can set them off. All my external entry points, doors, windows, garage etc have sensor switches. They are magnetic and if any one of them is moved at all the alarm will sound. If you want to feel safe while at home, particularly while sleeping then I have a zone system where I can disable certain or all interiour motion detectors at night or whenever I wish. I have the interiour garage door and the front door with a delay so I can come in either way, have 20 seconds to punch in the disable code. My system also dials the cops and lets them know a break-in has occured. They will call back right away and I/we have to give them an authentication code if it is a false alarm. (you will forget and set it off sometimes!!) My system also resets itself after 4 min. Been working fine for 11 years now with only an occasional back-up battery replacement. Mine was professionally installed as you need to pull wires to each and very window, door sensor etc.

Sorry to hear that some immororal slime buckets stole your hard earned belongings. Be prepared for another break-in within a month. Right after the items are replaced but before security is all beefed up. They already have the place figured out so the 2nd time is faster and easier. Check every buy-sell paper for 20 miles around for the next three months. You will likely get your stuff and find the perpetrators. A fellow worker got his scuba gear back 7weeks later from a news paper ad. He had a tough time keeping from maiming the creeps as they viewed their own stolen stuff. Then called the cops. Problems often occur after teenagers have guests over and the place gets cased out from the inside. A fiend of a friend over hears about all the stuff you have and you are ripped off. Otherwise odds are it was locals who drive by and are familiar. I've put a hard wired security system in 3 out of 4 of my homes. The stickers and external sirens turn away 95% of prospective thieves. I spent more money on heat detectors in the kitchen,laundry,garage & furnace room, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, low temp detector & flood detector. Than on door switches and motion detectors. Sleep well knowing the family and property is safe. The place is tied into a monitoring company who call the place before dispatching emergency services. Saves false alarms. There is radio backup in the attic incase some slime cuts the phone cable. A siren hidden in the soffet and an external siren/strobe under the 2nd story eve also announces to drivers going past there is a problem.

WHERE CAN I GET X 10?? IS IT WORTH THE MONEY A FRIEND HAD A SYSTEM PUT IN FOR 2500 $ PLUS $25 MONTH IT CALLS A MONITORING SERVICE

Havvey, X10 can be found on google it will come up on the right side.I just ordered 3 cameras from them Fri. on the recomndation of my minister(also dose work for banks and ATMs).

thanks once again for the info. i'm thinking that a lot of other people are being helped by this disscussion, as on many of the other forums as well. this a wonderful site with a lot of helpful intellegeny people. i'm think i will be under way installing my system this week. everyone have a great day.

I have some x10 wireless monitors that have the same batteries as placed in them three years ago. (the units self check and let you know if there is a problem) if you use a vcr for video you must hide the vcr somewhere crooks would not have time to look for it. you do have to do SOME thought before setting up a security system.

I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun in addition to any security system you get, it is nice to scare the pants off of an intruder. plus it is nice to be evenly matched if he has a gun or knife. Just remember that you cant shoot the guy until he is in the house, you cant shoot him while he is on the porch. and make sure that he cant tell his side of the story after its all over.

After our home was robbed twice we went with
a wired system that dials the sheriffs office.
They had wireless systems,but said they had a lot
of false alarms and constantly needed batterys.
We have wireless infa-red motion detectors at
the end of our drives,4 different sensors in 4
different locations,and batterys don't last very
long,so I'm glad we didn't get the wireless
system in our house.I'm looking at some camera's
that are activated by motion sensors and are
self contained with there own tape so you don't
need a recorder or vcr.What happens when the thief steels your vcr and takes your security
tape with him.

The X10 system are dead simply to install and set up. but before you do, decide where you want window and door monitors, and where you want motion sensors. after your planning is done and you get in the supplies, just plug in the master control. then install each point one at a time. the master will auto reconize each as it is installed. for about $200 ($150 basic) you can have a pretty extensive system that will call a preprogramed phone number and allow you to listen in to whats happening at your home to deciede if you want to call the police or if its a false alarm. for a hundred or so you can also have a video camera with controller to turn on a home type vcr when it sences motion. all is radio controled so no wiring. just lotts of AAA batteries.

do it yourself security systems can get a bit tricky. are you wanting it monitored? or dial your cell/pager? or just blare a siren?
do you know what the city codes are for a system?
if you just want some door and motion sensors that trip a siren, you shouldn't have to much problems. anything more than that gets complicated. if you could give a little more info on what your planning' i would be more than happy to help. had 15 years exp. installing.

thanks to all for the wonderful responce to my needs.i would like a siren/alarm setup to monitor the backside of the house at least.[this is the area that was used to gain entry]. this might scare them off before they break somethinglike windows etc. also a motion sensor in most all rooms that would see the windows and doors, so that if they came in that way, the alarm would go off. i'm not sure about using the window and door sensor. i'm using the smarthome catalog as a means of answering your questions about the type of devices to use. i guess there are other brands to use. i would be concerned about false alarms. does this happen often.and the battery life. i contacted security companies and they quote about $4-500. do it. thanks again

yes, false alarms can and do happen more often than not because the system is not maintained and tested. when picking the motion sensors to buy, get the best you can. old ones could trip off of the heater coming on. new ones can tell the difference between a human and a dog.
had an account with lots of wireless devices, and they only needed the batteries changed once a year, but these wernt your off the shelf AA's.
as with most things you get what you pay for, so dont skimp on this project.
i dont know if your home owners insurance will give you a break on the rate, but some will if the system is installed by a licensed co., which could pay for itself.
4-500$ doesnt sound to bad actually, since they have the right tools and experience, and for the peace of mind, IMHO.

thanks for the concern about my misfortune.again thanks for your advice. i have a company coming monday to give me a quote. the previous quote i mentioned was over the phone, and it was for a hardwired system. i'm still checking for a wireless one that i can install. yes i probably need to hurry, as said they may be back. i'm thinking the sherrif and his crew are not trying that hard. they found a set of prints on the broken window, but did not give me much hope of them finding anyone. sorry for the pity party i'm subjecting evetyone to. have a great day.

Another thought- I have one of the wireless driveway alarms, and it is really usefull. When I'm on vacation I take the inhouse receiver to a neighbors house and they receive the alarm when someone/something enters my driveway up near the house. Kinda like a high tech neighborhood watch.
