How much winch do I really need?

I am planning on getting a winch for my flatbed, bumper pull trailer. As load increases, price also increases, usually dramatically. The most I ever plan on using it for is to pull rolling loads such as tractors and cars onto the trailer which is about 14 inches off the ground and has 5 foot ramps. How much load capacity do you think I really need? I want it to be big enough to do the job but small enough it can be taken off and stored off the trailer.

What Wayne said AND.....when you pick up your winch, of whatever size, purchase at least one 'snatch block' or pulley-with-a-hook-on-it. If you run into a heavy pull run your cable out to the snatch block hooked to the load and bring the cable back and hook it to the trailer, NOT the winch. This will: double your pulling power, cut the load on the winch in half and, by the way, reduce the effective retrieval rate by half. Each block that you incorporate will double the pull of the previous configuration.

Hey! Wayne said it all since he included what T_Bone said which means that I said it all, also, since I said "What Wayne said and"....But why the 'and..blah, blah,blah'? BECAUSE I just NOW looked at what T_Bone said! 2 posts so close together.....both on the same question.....with all the same answers....Hmmmm.....what up? Guess I'm not the only one that didn't read before posting.....right, Ryan? :-)

Ryan, check out the post below your by Rick titled Winch. Look at T-Bones post and click on the link he provides. Their is alot of good information there on winches and what it takes to move a vehicle. Looks like I was right on with the 1/3 figure for a rolling load on normal ground, but with the info on this site you can figure out what you'll need for just about any condition. Good luck.

Hey Ryan, most of the smaller winches that I see listed always give a rating for a rolling load. Even a 10,000 lb tractor isn't gonna have that much of a rolling load, and no higher than your trailer is it isn't gonna take that much more percentage over the flat rolling load to get a machine on the trailer. The biggest thing is wether your always gonna be pulling onto the trailer from a short distance on "flat" ground, or are you gonna ever need to pull a tractor out of the weeds, mud, or whatever, or one with the tires locked up. I'm no winch guru by any means but if it were me I'd figure out the actual weight of the heaviest machine you plan to load and get a winch with that will handle a rolling load of at least 1/3 that amount. That should be more than adequate for anything you do on flat ground. If your gonna need it to pull a machine in under any of the other conditions I listed then your gonna need a substantially stronger winch. Personally I'd simply buy one as big as my budget would allow that I was positivwe would handle anything I would ever want to do with it. As pricey as winches are it's still more expensive to buy one undersize and either burn it up or have to go back out and buy another one that's bigger. Either way it's twice as expensive as getting what you really need the first go-round. You might want to look on the Surplus Center's site, they always seem to have alot of winches at pretty good prices as compared to buying elsewhere.
