I am shopping for a riding mower. Do any stand out better than the rest? Are there any small hitch accessories for riding lawnmowers available? I had thought that hitch was optional but I haven't seen any at all. I am looking at a craftsman. If I get it, I have a very small trailer with 1 7/8" ball. I'd like to be able to carry a chainsaw, toolbox or a gascan to my allis WD. I am not planning on any major loads.

Dave,

I have a 10 year old Craftsman mower with an 18 hp Kohler engine. I mounted a 1&7/8" ball to the lip on the rear. I use it to pull a home made garden trailer. It will pull a 500 pound load no sweat.

Hi Dave,
I've got a John Deere and a Cub. Both of them have a small hitch pin plate attached. The biggest difference between the two as I see it is that the John Deere is a mini tractor and the Cub is a mower. I pull a Swisher mower offset to one side of the Deere and take out 9' at a time. The Cub is used for trimming and the area around the house where the mulched grass looks best. The Cub has a small foot pedal you step on for reverse. Very easy to manuever. The Deere has an akward gear box that makes trimming and backing up a slow process but it pulls like a mule.

I've seen the new Husqevarna (spelling?) riders in the farm and home store. If those are anything like the Husky chain saw and gas trimmer I bought, that will be one heck of a mower and very much worth investigating. Seems to be a bit of a cross between tractor and mower.

I have 6 garden tractors and all have a hitch plate. Look for a used IH Cub Cadet, Wheel Horse or John Deere. My newest one is a 1978, mows great and pulls the trailer around without any problems.

I hate to say this but JD is probably the best of riding mowers. My blood is very RED.
