Odd Presser problem??

MY twin cylinder Campbell Hausfeld compressor, only two years old, runs fine at first, then slows way down as pressure goes up. I get's to pressure, and shuts off, just slows. I was a little low on presser oil, not much, hoped I hadn't scored the pump cyls. Always runs! NOW, fella at parts stores, says he learned that if the belt is not tracking straight it will cause this problem. EVER heard of that? He says, remove the cover and check align, adjust motor to fix. Seems kinda "easy", and odd to me!!

took off my cover over belt today, it was loose. Standard V-belt, not one of those ribbed kind. Didn't see how could be out of align being that? Anyway, got her tighter and seems fine now. What was I thinking putting the fan and belts to back near wall?? Sheesh! Sideways next time for service!

Hi GL Perry,

When working on belt driven fans, missaligned belts or incorrect belt tension can reduce pumping capicty by a easy 30%. It will also cause the motor to overload.

The same would apply to air compressors.

A loose belt will cause a pump to slow, but it will also squeal quite a bit to let you know. Might be a bad capacitor on the motor. There is one to start it, and sometimes another "run" capacitor, or one for both tasks.

Capacitors are used for starting, the provide that extra shot of power needed to get the motor running, when the motor comes up to speed a centrifugual switch cuts them out. Come to think of it, if the cut out switch is not cutting them out, they will drag the motor speed way down. sometimes the cutout mechanism (in the end frame of the motor) just needs cleaning or light lubricant.

your drive belts may be loose and slipping more as your pressure builds, try tightening them

May be voltage drop if cord to long or to small.Is the cord extra warm?

Only a 3ft cord, 220 volt, box right next to machine. Think I used 8 or 6 gauge wire too. I did check breakers to see if one side tripped,not so! Might look at belt tension, gotta get the cover off to see anything! Looks like new ones just pop off with a driver in slots, kinda nice, I hope!
