I have need to shorten an expansion coil spring. I shortened one about a year ago by heating and reshaping the hook at the end. The spring broke where I heated it. My question is--What do I need to do to prevent this from happening again?

The spring steel must be retempered in a furnace using the same temperature as used making the spring stock. What happened is you heated the spring steel up to it's hardening temperature where it reached it's maximim hardness, making the steel very brittle as well. Tempering(drawing) the steel at a specific temperature is required to make it withstand the stresses of bending and rebounding(springy). Most springs are wound from pretempered steel wire.
