I know you can not get these filled without the cylinder being certified. What can you do with old ones? Have them reinspected/etc?

An old cylinder with the bottom cut off makes a great dinner bell!

Take them to a welding supply place and they will test them to be sure that they are safe. The age isnt what determines if they should be filled or not. These are not like propane tanks for your charcoal grill. There should be a date stamped on the top of the bottle and if it is within the years they wont even test it. Some are 5yrs and some more years depending on the mark (star) next to the date on the bottle. It doesnt matter when it was inspected last either. I do know that an acyetalene bottle that has a (two piece bottom) will NOT be filled or tested. But DONT take my word, have them tell you, some look like those type but are not. These things I just asked at my dealer, thats how I know. They would charge $15 for testing and the filling is seperate. But its good for 5 or more yrs. too. They put them in a pool of water and fill the bottle up with gas or air and see how much water it displaces. If its too much then the bottle expanded beyond its limits. I dont know what they do with the old ones that fail the test.
