Has anyone had experience with using synthetic ATF in a newer (2000) transmission? I just bought a used vehicle wich the previous owner changed the ATF to synthetic instead of regular Dextron III. The vehicle shudders when shifting into 3rd and OD from time to time, usually when the tranny is warm, after 40 miles or so.

Thanks,
Matt

Odds are this transmission was on its last legs with the previous owner and synthetic was added hoping for a miracle cure in a bottle. Or synthetic was used for something to blame when the transmission outright failed after the sale.

I had similar problem, start shuddering about the time it was supposed to shift. Would straighten out if I kicked it in the a$$. It was the modulator valve.

Try a couple easy things before you jump on this as an oil problem.

1. Is the engine running up to par? Ludwig's post may sound a little wild but it can very well be a problem. The shift is controlled by the computer "torque management" which is very soft on modern Rocks. If the criteria is met to shift into OD and then the engine bogs slightly under the extra load the trans can shudder rather then make a crisp shift.

2. Your computer is the learn type. It shifts and does everything else to some degree based on the driving style of the previous owner. You may be on the other end of the driver spectrum. When you buy a used vehicle or one that develops a computer related glitch, do a computer relearn. Disconnect the battery(s) to kill all power to the computer for 20-30 minutes. That will erase the data in the learn memory and it will relearn matching your driving style.

I am not saying this is definitely your problem, but try the simple things first then go for the $$$ fix.

Yes it can. Shudder is slip stick of the friction element in the locking converter and the fluid affects the static and dynamic coefficient of friction. There are friction modifiers in the oil to lower the static coefficient of friction below the dynamic coefficient and thereby eliminate the slip-stick shudder you are experiencing. It also can occur on old fluid which has degraded (oxidized) the additive which alters the coeffiecient of friction. Change it back to the manufacturers recommended fluid.

Being an AMSOIL dealer, I've noticed that people tend to point the finger at things that are not the accepted norm, such as synthetic lubricants. I seriously doubt if the synthetic ATF fluid has anything to do with the shuddering. In fast most people report smoother operation with Synthetics.

The other thing to consider, unless the trans was a new trans filled with synthetic, or a Ford AOD tranny, you would not be able to drain all the fluid from it. Emptying the pan gets you 3 to 5 quarts, while the tranny can hold upward of 12 qts, depending on what it is. You can never change it all unless you can drain the converter, and most transmissions don't have provisions for this.

Unlikely.
I had a similar problem though with my '96 Dakota. When shifting into overdrive on a sight incline at 40-50mph it'd shudder like mad. Went away at higher speeds. Mechanic said transmission, dealership said transmission. I changed plugs and wires and all was well.

I have a '98 Dodge, elect 4 speed with 360v8 on an half ton, 80k miles.

Use Mobil1 and have noticed smoother and more complete shifting, shifting earlier (lower rpm's) and when very cold it now smoothly shifts into 4th (OD) whereas before, with paraffin oil only, it wouldn't go into OD for several miles at highway speed.

I suck out and put in new 2 qts every time I change the engine oil.
