I have a 4 HP B&S on a chipper shredder that starts easy when cold but starts hard when hot, if at all. Any suggestions as to cause and cure?

Thanks

I have a 10 h.p B&S engine on a chipper shredder that was harder to start when hot.

I solved the problem by reaching over to the throttle/governor linkage, and slowing the engine so that it could cool somewhat before shutting it off. Makes a world of difference.

Be sure to clean the air cooling intakes frequently on a shredder engine. They tend to suck up all sorts of debris to limit the air flow.

The one thing that comes to mind is too tight of a clearance on one or both valves. The engine will start fine cold, but once the metal in the engine expands, the valve stems lose clearance and the engine has a difficult time developing enough compression to start. Checking the valve clearances will tell you if this is the problem or not. Generally there chould be about .005" on the intake and about .007" on the exhaust, but you should be able to at least pass a .002" under both valves. If not, then they need to be removed and a little metal shaved off the valve stem.

sounds like a spark plug problem, cracked inside or the wrong heat range

AS MENTIONED VALVE CLEARANCE IS THE MOST LIKLEY PROBLEM. THE VALVES WEAR INTO THE SEAT TO A CERTAIN EXTENT BUT THE BIGGER ISSUE IS HEAT RELATED STREACHING. ITS BEST TO PULL HEAD AND VALVE TO FILE THE END OF THE VALVE A VERY SMALL AMOUNT. HAVING SAID THAT I HAVE DONE THIS IN PLACE.MAKE SURE TO CLEAN ALL SHAVINGS BEFORE YOU CLOSE IT UP
