I bought a tiller at auction for $15. It's in great shape except it needs a new clutch lining. "No problem" you should say. Hmmmph.

The tiller is old and has lots of nicely-done replacement parts on it. There is no brand name, no model number, no nothing.

It has a vertical-shaft engine that sits on top of the tiller. On the bottom of the shaft is a bell housing that is lined with the clutch lining. The clutch engages with a male pulley-shaped piece mating to the female bell-housing. But with the lining worn, the tines have no torque at all.

The housing of the vertical shaft from the clutch down to the gearbox has the number 3450 cast into it. Other than that, I have no idea what brand or model, which it's turning out I need in order to replace that lining.

Any ideas of where I can find out what I have?

Tkx in advance

Similar story: used tiller bought at a garage sale with worn clutch. The description of your unit fits very much the description of mine. However I am lucky in the sense that my unit has a name plate. It was made by Magna American Corporation from Cincinnati Ohio (now bankrupt).I found out the Brigg & Stratton engine driving it was built in 1965. I'm searching the web to find a source for replacement clutch... This unit is built to last another 100 years ( as long as I can lay my hand on a replacement clutch of course) I'm a Canuck from north of the border, will advise if I miraculously come across a supplier. Let me know of your own finding by posting a follow up to your original message.

I have a local dealer that supplies me with parts for my 8N tractors, sold me a New Holland tractor, and has a terrific lawn & garden parts desk. They have found what they think is the right clutch lining. The model that they're getting it for is the (now defunct) General Power (now MTD) model # 500471. It's not exactly what I have, but the internals might be just right enough for the lining to fit. For $16 I'm gonna find out in a few days.

Glad to hear there is still hope...Local dealer I contacted so far around here (South shore of Montreal) won't even bother looking up their part catalog unless I provide them with an existing manufacturer's name and exact part number...So much for service...
I'm checking local specialty shops (motorcycle, karts...) inquiring for a rebuilding shop willing to custom machine such a lining...Not much luck so far. I'd be more than willing to risk a miserly $16 ($24 Canadian)for a part available off the shelf. Let me know if your efforts pay off. Maybe you can then provide me with the coordinates of your local dealer and the spec of the part they got for you. Good luck and keep in touch.

Hi Guys, Have you thought about trying a go-cart type centrifugal clutch $20? Might work if all else fails.
