What is your opinon of the JD 318 garden tractor? Have heard a lot of good about the tractor in general-also that the Onan engine is prone to breaking crankshafts around 1500 hrs. Would you consider 1500 hours being a high time engine? Seems to me it would be. BTW-Checker has 800 watt inverters on sale for 50 bucks-picked one up, handy little bugger. Would appreciate your opinion on the tractor---Jack

Never heard a bad work about any Onan. Since they cater to the RV crowd, if they didn't do their job, you'd bet there would be another brand sitting in the RV's.

The only bad thing about an Onan is the parts prices. When you finally do need to overhaul it, you will find the parts are, shall we say, priced in the range of tthe motorhome crowd!

Many small engines are designated as "throw-away" engines in the trade; meaning that it is cheaper to replace them than to repair them. Check around or contact the manufacturer direct.

I appreciate your asking but I don't know a thing about a John Deere Garden tractor. I would like to own one sometime. My opinion of them is that they are a good solid unit. I tried to get a 310 last winter on Ebay that was up in Vegas. Had a tiller with it and it was an estate deal and high bid was like $500 or so. As to the Onan engine, I only know how they do on Welders and RV gen sets. I have never seen a broken crankshaft but have seen broken rods. odd thing about the rods is there is enough room in the crankcase for the pieces to lay there and they will run with only one piston going up and down, (or back and forth). These were both on portable welders.

1500 hours? Hmmmm, If you are looking at buying one with this many hours on it I would pay more attention to the condition of the engine than the hour meter. If it's had regular oil changes and air filters thats more important.
