Starts and runs fine when cold, after about an hour, it will quit and not start, if left cool down it will back fire out the exhust and start. When hot again it will die. What gives?

My 15 hp worked like a champ on the riding mower and one day what you say happened. I'm a pretty fair mechanic so I applied my skilly and failed repeatedly. One day I was ready for it. I had the air cleaner off with a can of starting fluid in my hand when it started to die. I gave it a squirt and nothing happened.

Next day I bought a $42 magneto and no problems since. This mag has no points and no wires to it so when it quit (firing) there was nothing but it and the spark plug and the plug was new.

If your motor has a low oil pressure switch connected with your ignition system, that may cause the problem. As engine heats up, the oil thins out and shuts off engine till it cools back down. Check pressure switch, oil weight and oil level.

Two things:
Vapor Lock -- either the carburator or fuel lines are getting hot.

Magneto has a high temperature problem. (When you try to start the engine while hot, do you get spark? If so, vapor lock is probably the problem.)

George, I don't get any spark, untill it's cooled off. I'm guessing the backfire is gas vapors in the muffler, that built up when it dies.

I would say your problem then is in the ignition. Does it have an automotive-type coil? Then either the condensor or the coil is temperature sensitive. If it has a solid state magneto, I believe you have to replace the whole thing.

I believe George is correct about the ignition. If this is the Command series engines (Vee-twin/OHV), I'd suggest calling a Kohler dealer -- this may be covered under warrenty, even if the 2 years is up.

My Kohler problems were somewhat different. The dealer, after checking with Kohler, told me that the time line on the warranty was strictly adhered to. Problem was glue failure on the flywheel. I couldn't believe they wouldn't stand behind it, but they didn't.

It has a mag on the flywheel, no coil. Kohler calls it a ign. modual.
