I'm borrowing a sandblaster from a friend and have to supply my own sand. He says it's special sand but doesn't remember where he got it last time he used it. Anyone know where I can buy this stuff? Is it a common item?

The Eastwood Company sells various blasting medias, including aluminum oxide, glass bead, poly abrasive, silicone carbide and walnut shells. It depends on what you want to clean.

T-Bone is right about Home Depot. The playsand works fine for occasional use. Make sure you filter it though. Most sand blasting hoppers have a lid with a sieve built in. If you don't use that, you will plug up the nossle and make sandblasting a miserable experience. If you are blasting something small, like a lawn mower, one or two bags will do. If you are doing a whole tractor, you will need many bags. It is possible to recover the sand, but you need to be more official than a first timer is likely to be, with a booth or ground cover or whatever to collect the used sand.

Another must do: It is imperitive that you use eye protection and a respirator. A whole head shield is better, but usually not available for the occasional blaster (I have used a welding helmet with clear glass and a respirator underneath. Works great (and I happen to have one).

Sand goes everywhere. You will need to be far away from anything the wife wants to keep clean. Be careful - silicosis is very real. So is hurting your eyes, hands etc with blowing sand.

We have a building supply company called Home Depot here and they carry it, how ever if you need alot then buy a truck load of dry sand, it's much cheaper.
