Kellogg air compressor

Can anybody help me with some information about an old Kellogg air compressor. The unit I'm writing you about has a plate on it's side that says American Brake Shoe Company, Kellogg Division. It was made in the 1950's and the model # is "GE 331XBO". This is a two stage unit with an 18 inch flywheel, it's bolted to a tank of approximately 80-90 gallons. What I'm trying to find out is the horse power size of motor or engine this compressor originally came with and was it electric, gas or diesel? Also if this unit originally came with a gas or diesel engine can you recommend a horse power size of electric motor that will operate this compressor. Any information you can supply will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I have one of these Kellog compressors. It came with a 7HP 3ph motor.

A 335 Kellogg is 5hp, so it wouldn't be far off the mark. Probably needs to run about 700-900 RPM, depending on desired output pressure.

Granger's catalog list many different sizes of compressors, what size of motor needed for the speed you want to run it at. It takes about twice the hp for an internal combustion engine than an electric motor.

Most compressors that size take a 3hp electric, with 220 volt. Make sure of your rotation! Change the oil, clean or replace the filters, and use only 30wt non detergent oil!
