Recomended to use enamel reducer from paint store, three drying levels for ambient temperature.

Also use a hardener to achieve a longer lasting finish.

You can cheat by using lacquer thinner, it is cheap and fast drying but not as glossy finish.

Never tried mineral spirits but would have to guess that it would take paint forever to dry if they would blend.

Good luck

I can't find regular enamel reducer in any of the paint shops, all they have is for acrylic enamel, but thet tell me that will not work for enamel. I have a gallon of Dulux and I don't want to waste it. The paint is five years old, but was never opened. One shop said it will not be any good any more. Opinions!

All follow ups were good just wanted to add take that 5 year old paint and get it shook real good before opening it. I bought delux closeout deal and use it on things that arent critcal ,hate the overspray .wear a good respratior and some old clothes that syn. enamel is tough!! if its going on something you plan to keep rember it will ""chalk"" in afew years.i"ll go buy ""good" paint when painting something inportant. my 2 cents worth EPB

Paint should be good. You can use the acrylic enamel reducer. Synthetic enamel reducer would be better, but rather insignificant. Paint shop help are generally not painters and can only go by the book for recommendations. When ever I use a synthetic enamel I use lacquer thinner, simply because the synthetic is not as durable as other finishes such as acrylic enamel, urethanes etc. You can still use hardener with lacquer thinner, just paint fast to keep glossy. Lacquer will dry faster and also will dry paint job in around body work. So if you are painting body panels and not just frames I would use the acrylic enamel reducer you found with hardener.

If you are painting something that is treasured to you I would buy new paint.
A new gallon of urethane Omni in white, gray etc. costs about $40/ gallon. $12/hardener plus reducer. Omni is generally sold wherever Centari and Dulux is sold.
