Rear Axle Disassembly

Just purchased a non-working horse hot walker. It is made using a rear axle from a car (as all I've seen are). A pulley (that's connected to the electric motor) is connected where the shaft from the transmission would go and the walker assembly is where one of the wheels would be.

Anyway, there is some kind of problem within the differential. I'm trying to take it apart to diagnose the problem but can't get the shaft free from the rest of the assembly. I have all the nuts off and it moves out about 1 inch (approximately at the end of the bolts), then stops. I can't see inside to see what's catching it. Any suggestions?

You will have to remove the axle(s) before the center section can be removed.

I have no experience with car differentials, so can you tell me where I would locate the C-clips?

I agree with Jack, you need to check for the clips first. There is a pin inside the differential, perpendicular to the axle shaft with two "spider gears" on it. The "C" clip will be in a groove in the end of the axle shaft, next to this pin, if you have the type of axle that uses it. To remove the "C" clip, you need to remove a pin or retaining bolt that holds the before-mentioned pin in place, and withdraw the pin enough for the axle to move toward the center, to allow the "C" clip to be removed.

Not all axles are set up this way, some are just held in place by the outboard bearing, next to where the wheel would be.

To make the unit work, just driving one wheel, or in this case, the horses, the action of the differntial has to be eliminated, or "locked out".

This may have been done by drilling a hole and inserting a bolt, or welding components in the differential solid. That may be why it won't come apart, or it could be as simple as that water and dirt have entered, jamming the splines.

If you have a GM 10 bolt or 12 bolt or a Ford 8.8" rear end then you have c clips. I don't know anything about the Dana rear ends so they may or may not have c clips. To take the axles out you need to remove a bolt that is in the spyder gears. Once this bolt is removed push each axle in towards the pumpkin. This will take the tension off the c clips. You can use a long pair of needlenose pliers or sometimes a magnetic pickup to remove the c clips. Now the axle shafts can be removed from the rear end housing. The second picture on the link I provided shows a c clip being removed and it's location.
