Have any of you welders or repairers repaired a leak in an air compressor tank? I have one that has developed a leak on the bottom near where the drain hole is located. Do you think it can be repaired safely?
Thanks for any information you can give.

Bob: I soddered a pin hole shut in a small pancake compresser last summer. It was a big mistake. As i was putting my tools away the tank ruptured at the seem and blew way up in the air.
Easily could have killed me or a family member.
It was sitting at rest with 110 pounds in tank.

If the tank has a leak, the whole bottom is probably thin from rusting, and weak. While I can't relate a specific incident of tank failure from this, I'd say it is better to replace the tank than to be sorry if the bottom were ever to weaken enough to blow out.

I saw a picture in an air compressor safety pamphlet where the large tank and motor went thru the roof of a two story factory building. The bottom of the tank was blown wide open.
