Whats going on here? Three weeks ago my McCulloch weedwacker ran out of gas. It was running fine. OK, then this week I made brand a new fuel mix, it wont start. Pull, pull, pull...I tried that fuel in my McCulloch chain saw and it ran great (needless to say I sawed alot of branches). Can someone enlighten me? I did all the usual things like check plug, and cleaned the carb, etc. HELP! my weeds are really tall now.

Jim, same thing happened to me, tried everything, was about to quit, it would even start, but sounded muffled. That is when I found the fresh mud dauber nest in the muffler!!!!! Cleaned it out and it started first pull.

BINGO!!! After I reassembled the carb after cleaning it "again" I put that back on "again", I took off the muffler and it started right up! (sounds cool) I only ran it for a second or two. I put the muffler back on and guess what, I could not start it. I took the muffler off and blew it out REAL GOOD, put it back on and I'm back in business.

THANKS!

Jim

hey...

Whenever one of my small engines won't start, I take off the air filter cover, remove the filter, then shoot a shot of gum-out carb cleaner into the air intake hole. Usually starts immediately. Don't use too much, or you might wind up looking at weeds from the root side up.

Hey Jim I had this problem before the diaphram in the carb got stiff and the thing would not work. try either and see if fires if does rebuild carb. Mine did not look bad or seem that much different than new one

Got fuel flow to the carb ? Tried any ether to see if it will 'pop' ?

Check your 'fuel intake pendant' if you've got one. It's usually a little piece of foam and a fitting on the end a plastic tube that hangs in the gas tank and feeds the carb. (Your setup may be completely different)

I had an ECHO trimmer that had the foam turn to mush after awhile without gas.

I took the foam float out and blew that out and that didnt help. Would the foam float look like it was OK when it really isnt? The pump ball that you push to make it start you can see fuel move thru the clear lines going to the carb. I will get some ether and try that. I will let you know how I make out with the ether.

thanks, Jim

Yes.. just use enough ether to make it pop over..(if it will).

You see gas in the line to the carb, so the fuel pendant is probably ok. Mine looked like a cross between gum and silly putty.

Try cranking the engine over in a 'normal start routine. Stop and pull the sparkplug. Smell it.

If it's wet with fuel, look to problems with the ignition. If it's dry and you can't smell any fuel, look to a plugged jet in the carb. If it's oily but doesn't smell like fuel, you may have got a 'dollop' of unmixed oil in the carb. (rare with modern 2 stroke oils)

And as always with a 2 stroke be sure try a new spark plug if you haven't already done so..

I tried a little shot of ether thru the carb with the filter out. NOTHING not even a putt. I guess "maybe?" I missed a jet when I blew it out? (my Dad also had it apart and blew it out) I forgot to mention that when I tried to start it after the new fuel it "sounded" different when the choke was on full, like it was muffeled or something, mean anything? Compression seems good. The NEW plug is dry but there is a hint of fuel smell. (which is from the cylinder walls or rings?) With the carb off I see a small hole under the carb inlet, on the cyl. This lines up with a small valley on the carb mount, which in turn lines up with a small hole on the carb body. Is this the suction hole for the intake reed? I can try to blow that carb out again, but I dont know....
Thanks, Jim

Jim, if it didn't pop with the ether I'd look to the ignition. (the reason for the ether test)

Carb jets, fuel or no, it should run for a few seconds on ether. (You don't want to run very long as you have no bottom cyl lube on ether)

Get a helper to hold the spark plug threads grounded against the cylinder head while you spin the engine... (get your partner to wear gloves) or if they slip they will get a 'surprise')

In a modern machine you should see a fat blue spark. Let us know what you find out.

bbott, I checked my ignition, and it worked OK, then I read Rogerinsomo at the top of the posts. Read what happened there.

THANKS for all your help.

Jim
