Odd threads... Die needed

I need to chase the threads on a truck front wheel spindle. It's 1970 vintage, and seems to be exactly 20TPI, so I doubt it's metric. The OD of the threads and the OD of the unthreaded area next to the threads is .841".

The closest die I can locate is 7/8", 20TPI, NSS.

Does that sound right? I think the die would be a bit oversized, but it is a split, adjustable die, so maybe it will work. Can anyone advise?

North-American Tool shows part# 13268 as 13/16-20 round die w/ 2"O.D. Call them @ 18008728277 and ask for the distributor closest to you.

Search for 'Airgas'. They used to have a lot of odd size taps & dies. Not cheap, tho. Try a thread restore file. They have 8 different sizes per file, two US files plus metric, about $10 ea. Available at Airgas & others.
20 tpi is one of the sizes.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply.

Someone on another board posted that Harbor Freight has a set of 8 chasers for various spindle nut threads including the one I need, for $9.99. For that price I don't expect too much, but I hope it will do the job! I'm going to call a Harbor Freight outlet in the morning that is within driving distance to see if they carry the set, otherwise I'll order it from their website.

If you decide you really need a die and can't find one try MSC. They have a good selection of "special" threading tools.

Looking in the machinery handbook I see a 13/16 - 20 thread, WHich is a .812 OD. Hope this helps, good luck finding a die of that size. Call a cutting tool distrubutor.

Check with Snap On,Owatonna Tool Co. Mac Tools and maybe Grainger.Several companies make a universal thread restore tool with changable die plates.I have owned a Snap On for over 40 years and has saved me lots of problems. Mine has a range of threads from 32 tpi to7-1/2tpi.The 7.5 was optional and I used it to repair damaged threads on Nat.Std fire hose couplings.Works very well for me.

Hi Bob,

Have you considered the possibility of using a thread restorer file? I have found them quite handy if I don't have the correct size die and the threads are not buggered too bad. Usually a lot cheaper than a "special size" die.
