OT: Steering Wheel Position Sensor

A friend with a '99 Suburban has been told that the vehicle has a problem related to this "steering wheel position sensor" thingy.

I'm not real up to date on gadgets on newer vehicles so can anyone tell me what this thing is/does?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the numerous sensors the relays information to the vehicle data recorder. One more thing that monitors driver's behavior.

This gadget is mounted on the steering column. To service it (replace) the steering column must be removed.

What this gadget does is sense the turn rate of the steering wheel. This information plus the vehicle speed and gear selection and engine RPM is read by the steering module and varies the power steering boost by controlling an electric solonoid which changes the power steering pressure.

The steer boost is different for hiway cruising than it is for an abrupt manuver or for turning the wheel sitting still.

Yeap, another little gadget that was put on simply because they could. Part pricing is GM dealer only and it is suppose to take about 2.5 to do the change out and retest. Uh huh, sure, it takes almost that long to read the service bulletin. The cute part is that there are other things about this system that will cause problems also.

I've heard that if this gadget is completely disabled (removed?), that you're left with plain ol' power steering. Which seems like it would be a good thing.

Know if there's any truth to that?

The control valve on the steering gear can be unhooked for testing to see if steer problems go away. It does make the system like good ole fashioned power steering. This does however make the steering wheel very light to the touch and is not a good idea. It could make you miss a bridge while reaching for a CD.

i just checked my book only goes up to 98, didn,t find any sterring wheel position sensors, but they could well have , they have sensors for pretty much everything else, the older ones were so much easier to work on.best of luck i been chasing an ignition problem for the last week and im sensored out.lol

It controls the varable rate steering. This effects the feel at the steering wheel. I had the same problem.
