Parts washer what fluid do you use

I'm thinking about buying a parts washer 20 gallion one but what fluid do you use in them. I want something that will leave the parts oil free since some of them will be painted but also remove to old oils etc. What in the world do you use and where do you find it??? Thanks for your help

We use a ZEP Dyna 143 in ours. It's a bit pricey but not as compared to some. It's alot safer than alot of the others because it has a fairely high flash point. We work on heavy equipment and old cranes and it has never failed to cut the grease on anything we wanted to clean.

I use kerosene mixed with Kano Labs "Floway". Does a good job and rinses clean with a hose.

I just use kerosene in My parts washer. Works great, no odor, cleans good.

Yes, Allied will freeze because of the water content. I forgot to mention that. You have to keep it from freezing if you use it in a northern climate. Good point!

If you are interested in a biodegradable washer fluid try ALLIED brand fluid. I use it in my parts washer and it seems to do a good job for my type of use. It comes in gallon jugs and is mixed with water. Fot my type of use, it has to be changed about every year because it gets too oily to be effective, but the change interval will be different for every individual.
One benefit to this stuff is it isn't as hard on your skin as petroleum based fluids but it does dry your skin out pretty fast. When it is still fresh it will take off paint if a painted part is soaked overnight, so if you want to save the paint, wash the part quickly and rinse it off with water. Stoddard is an old standby that a lot of guys use and I think it holds up longer before it needs to be changed. Just my $.02

Is there a problem with the water mix solvents such as Allied freezing if they are in an unheated area?

I think there used to be a OSHA or similar govt rule that the flash point for solvents used in parts washers had to be above 140 F.

There used to be several different solvents on the market with 140 flashpoints. Of course things change over the years.

Make sure your lid has a proper fuse link to melt and close the lid in case of fire. If it does not, do not use flammable cleaning fluid in it.

I use varsol. Works fine. I have a 20 gal. tank and put about 1/3 water in also. The water can be drained off the bottom, with the crap in it and save the varsol. Just top it up again with water. Occasionaly you'll need to add varsol. Also on the lid you need a fusable link to hold the lid up, but the link will melt in case of fire and let the lid shut.

Our local Tractor Supply Store has the solvent reccomended for their washers for aobut $15 fir a 5 gallon can. Some products are cheaper, but the solvent lasts a long time, and has a pretty low flash point.

I use varsol. It works great. You can get it at almost any bulk plant. The one near me sells it for $2.00 per gallon. At that price gasoline would probably work just as well. One thing with varsol, wear safety glasses cause when it gets in your eyes it burns.

My tank holds about 30 gallons and, i use minerial spirits at $1.69 per gallon from Menards (on sale) in it. It's worked very well for me. Robert

Is this mineral spirits sold for thinning paint? If it is, I think it has a much lower flash point than parts washer fluid???

You may ? be right, but my parts wash tank isn't a cheapo unit, and the door is quite heavy. It's designed to seal once closed, cutting off all the oxygen to any fire that may start. It also has a pin on the door designed in such a way, that if a fire starts it will automaticly slam the door shut. Robert

I wondered the same thing when I went to refil mine and the owners manual said to use mineral spirits with a flash point of 105 or above. I checked with my bulk oil distributor and got a MSDS on mineral spirits and VM&P naptha. I really wanted to use the VM&P because it is a dryer (hotter) solvent. Flash was 103 on it and 108 on mineral spirits.

If you want the old stand-by product, and your washer is approved for it, check with a bulk oil distributer "jobber" for Stoddard's Solvent.

If you want the newer environmentally friendly stuff, the place that sold your washer will probably have it, or check out...
