Several weeks ago I posted about a replacement muffler for a Kohler twin (CV22) engine costing almost $200. Someone encouraged me to have at fixing the broken internal baffles myself, so for $200 I tried. It worked!!! Actually repair was a lot easier than getting it off and putting it back on. Needed to unbolt and raise the engine to get to mounting bolts.

Problem was badly deteriorated internal portions of the main exit tube. I capped the internal blown out end, repaired a blow out near the exit end by welding a patch over it. Some repair to the mounting bulkhead. Hardest part of repair was cutting the canister open and welding it back together. The steel used to make this thing was pretty heavy. I never mic'ed it, but it was heavier than std exhaust pipe material. Certainly no problem to mig it.

Don't know how long it will last, but for now it is very sturdy, doesn't look that bad, and I put the $200 toward a new compressor.

Thanks for the encouragement to attack this beast.

Chuck

Glad it worked out. I'm working on the idea of using two identical old fire extinguishers to make 4"x 10" verticle mufflers for my friend's Kohler 22hp horizontal. The steel is quite heavy to hold the prassure and the shell is ready made with two ends. It just needs to be shortened from the 14" length, add the interior "holy pipe" and a piece of of pipe coupling to mount it.

Chuck, I have in the past received encouragement that pushed me to tackle a job I was afraid of or uncertain if I could complete. That leads to self-confidence and is a snowball effect of realization you can do almost anything you set your mind to. Now, you know your muffler was fixed right AND, since you did it it has a lifetime warranty. If it ever fails again, you will fix it again FREE OF CHARGE. Good job.

Now I know what to do when mine fails. What you said about this site is true. Not only does your self confidence get a boost, but a lot of times you find out either how to do it or how to do it better. What did we ever do without it.
