Belt sizing for my homemade generator

I need to know what size belt to buy.The distance between the center of both pulley's is 13 3/8inch's .One pulley is 8inch's and the other is 2.5inchs .It's a standard machine size width,look's like a autu belt from the car's 30years ago.Thank You for any help you can provide.

I'm thinkin' ya might have to add a little, given the diameters are different. because the belts 2 runs have to reach the other pulleys diameter.

Wow a pulley ratio of 3.2 : 1! Either that motor or generator is going to be running REAL fast.

The big pulley is on the gas engine,the engine does not run very fast but my motor(generator) is at the speed needed for the correct output.I tried it last night,now I need to mount the cap's and a receptacale box.

Whatever length and width (cross section) "V" belt you need, try to get one of the "extra service" or "severe service" belts as used on riding lawn mowers and self propelled lawn mowers. They will pull more horsepower and last longer. Yes, and they cost more also, but you will not have to buy as many of them. Some of them are different color than standarsd "V" belts. I think I have seen some blue, some green, and some red in color. Also have seen some black with colored "patch" with the size and "exrta service" marking as well as some all black. You may wish to go as small (short) as you can to allow more room for adjustment. Good luck

Quick & dirty way to get belt length, run a tape measure around the pulleys in place of belt, take reading & buy closest belt length.

Using your numbers, the exact length would be 43.8 inches. You can find the formula on page 260 of the Grainger catalog, or on their website.

Hi John,

2.5 x 3.1416 /2= 3.927
8 x 3.1416 / 2= 12.567
13.375 x 2 = 26.75

Or 43.25 total. So a B430 (43") or a B440 should work if have adjustment.

HI T-Bone,I should have told you what size pulley,I am usingthe A or I think they are also called 4L type pulley.I have a 2.5 gas engine to drive a 2hp singal phase eletric motor .With 20uf cap's hooked on the output terminal's I get 135 under no load,ok for my tool's and lighting.135vac from 1 leg to frame of motor ,266vac between both lead's.DO you think a 44inch belt is still the size?

Hi john,

Good thing you made me look as I was wrong on the "B" belt number, B40= 43"

Yes you are correct a "A" belt is a 4L430 or 43" If your measurement was taken from the center of slot adjustment then I would get a 4L430.

"A" v-belt = 1/2" at the top
"B" v-belt = 21/32" at the top and is a 5Lxxx series v-belt
3Lxxx series is 3/8" at the top

The math for length is correct as I rechecked my math. :)

About 10amps@115v max?

Hey T Bone... Wouldn't you use only 1/2 the circumference of each sheave??? The belt doesn't go all the way around each one when it's installed!!!
Correct formula should be... 1/2 circumference (pi x diameter) of sheave #1 plus 1/2 circumference of sheave #2 plus twice center to center distance...

Thats true but I don't think he'll have enough grip with a single "A" belt and it's doubtful on a single "B" belt.

I was told a 70a car alternator would pull at least 2hp at max current. Use a automotive v-belt. Better stay away from those fractional hp belts at the hardware store.
