O.K. this is a simple question for most of you but I have not messed with a battery that in not maintance free in several years. I do remember that you add distiled water but not how much! I have a Ford 2000 disel 12V. The battery has 6 fill caps. I can see water in them but don't know if the water just needs to cover the metal plates or the white plastic plates on top of the metal plates? If I put too much water, what will happen?

Thanks.

There's a lip that goes down from the fill hole, and the way Ive always done it is to add water until the water reaches this lip. If you watch, you will be able to see the water "pucker" or kinda form a bubble(hard to describe but you'll know exactly what I'm talking about when you see it) when it reaches the bottom of this lip. When it does that it's full. If you do get one too full, it isn't really a problem other than the corrosiveness of the spilled acid. If you do overfill, watch the battery for a couple days after you fill it and if you see signs of leakage, just take a water hose and wash everything down real good at the end of the day.

If you fill the cell to about 3/4 of an inch below the lip of the fill cap, it should be adequate. The plates must be covered or they will oxidize.

I bought a "battery water-bottle" at the automotive parts store. It has an automatic fill spout. It automatically shuts off the flow of water when it reaches the proper level.

Fill it until even with the plastic plates (if I'm reading you right), or until the water is even with the circular hole or oval a half inch? or so below the bottom of the threads. To much water will be forced out, and the resulting acid will eat any metal that it touches.
