Can you give a little more info? Are you using dial-up or DSL or cable? What are your security settings in the new computer? Do you have firewall turned on? Lots of possible things that could cause that problem.

In IE, to check your security settings, click on tools, internet options, security tab. Medium is about the norm. When you say click on a link, is this from another site? Typing in your address bar, clicking from your favorites?

As Walt said, click on all the default settings for safe yet usable internet surfing. After selecting new settings restart your computer to clear any confusion in the operating system. Windows XP is considerably better than predecessor systems, but you must know the basics to obtain full benefits. Consider taking a computer course to learn about the bells and whistles of windows XP.
