refrigerator quit

I know there is a refrigerator repairman out there somewhere who can help. I know it is not really related to tractors but it is located on the old family farm - guess that qualifies. The house has been vacant for about 15 months and the electricity has been off for the same amout of time. Plugged the frig in wednesday and went back today and not cool. The compressor was hot to the touch, coils are relatively clean. It is not that old of a kenmore unit. It ran fine for over a year - a friend gave it to me for helping him on his house. Tapped on the compressor after it cooled down to room temp and tried again and no luck. We tested the wires with an amp meter gadget and it is not pulling any on startup. The fan runs fine.

Any suggestions?

John,PA is on the money. Kenmores are famous for shooting the startup relay on the side of the compressor. I just replaced the relay on my kenmore. It acted exactely like you described.

I used to work in an appliance repair shop. Compressors sticking on units that had set for a while is not unusual. If John's suggestions don't solve your problem, check with a local applaiance shop. Where I worked we used to have a unit for "rocking" and freeing stuck compressors. They were successful about 50% of the time. If it works, you have a working refrigerator for the cost of a service call, if not, most of the time it costs more to install a compressor than the price of a small refrigerator.

As you write, "the compressor was hot". Good possibility that you have a "locked rotor" and the compressor is cycling on the little current cut-out (KLIXON) which is the little black disk that is located under the electrical cover on the compressor shell.

The starting relay , also located under the plastic electrial cover on the side of the compressor could be burned out.

As you write "after the cooled to room temp, there was no amperage draw when you tried to restart it". I would suspect that the KLIXON is open (burned out).

Make, model, serial number. You might try a new KLIXON first.
