I never saw the manual og this saw my dad handed down to me. It runs fine and I'm thinking about getting a new bar/chain for it; but I need to know:

What is the proper fuel mixture- one guy told me its 12oz motor oil to a gallon of gas for a saw this old?

Is a tune up easy enough for a decent auto mechanic (that's me) or should I run her over to the chain saw repair place for a cleaning?

Thanks,

Ed

I also have a P20 I bought new in 1973. The operators manual says: "the portion of oil to gasoline is 1 part OMC 2 cycle motor oil(Pioneer Chain Saw Engine oil in the U.S.A.)or a reputable brand 2 cycle engine oil to 16 parts gasoline." I always used lawnboy 2 cycle oil myself, it did smoke some though. If you want a copy of the manual I have just email me your address and I will send you a copy of what I have.

I run nothing but 32:1 in all my 2 cycles. Works good for me not too much or too little oil. The old Pioneers like a little more oil. I'd rebuild your carburetor if you havent it really gets them going good again.

Are there rebuild kits for each model or should I tear it down myself and just clean the esisting parts up OR should I run it to the shop for a tune up- what does a tune cost?

I would agree with most all of the posts that have been on this site about saws. A small bottle of 40;1 mix is perfect or even a little more oil. Just watch for carbon on the plug and spark arrester screen on the exhaust. DO NOT tear down your carb if you don't know what you are doing! They are micro little things and I have special tools to set them up. The needle valve must be set on the NOSE , or it will have all kinds of problems. It also depends if it is a Walbro or Zama. I can rebuild them correctly if you want to remove it. There are lots of good shops but it all costs bucks. The kits are around $10.oo and it takes about one hour to do . Do not take any short cuts with these little guys. Jeff

gas mixture doesn't depend on how old the saw is but he quaility of your oil.Use stihl or husky oil and you can run it 50-1. comes in small bottles ,one bottle to a gallon of gas. Also amsoil [synthetic] would be good too, 50-1.I run old ski doos with amsoil 40-1, it works out that way with half quart to five gallons.
