Metric wrench question.

While looking at tools today at Sears I noted that a 13 piece set of metric wrenchs contained even numbered metric sizes such as 8, 10, 12, etc. A 15 piece set contained odd numbered sizes of wrenches such as 9, 11, etc. Does anyone have an opinion which set would contain the more commonly used sizes? I realize it's best to have all the sizes, but which would be the best starter for metrics? I would be using to work on vehicles and farm equipment. Thanks.

You need them all. Toyota likes to stick w/ 10,12, 14, for most things ( remember when you could strip a GM product w/ a 1/2 and a 9/16) Isuzu likes the odd #'s. If you work on a modern American (?) car you can expect anything 'cause all the parts come from anywhere.

Ditto on the full set. Just when you least expect it you'll get into different nut/bolt sizes. I just converted all the 10mm 8.8 fasteners on a machine to 17 mm heads. I kept forgetting to pack a 16mm wrench for the bolt head for field service.

Unfortunately you will need all the sizes. Actually there are times when you will require two of each as you may need to hold the head of a bolt while removing a nut the same size from the bolt.

I worked on Japanese motorcycles for a lot of years, and my JD750 is a Yanmar with green paint, so it's also metric.

Smaller bolts are commonly even sizes, ie 8,10,12,14. Larger bolts are frequently odd sizes, primarily 13,17 and 19.

Based on that, I'd get the mixed set. It should still be cheaper than buyng individual wrenches.

If you work on american stuff, go with 10-12-13-15-18, Japanese means 12-14-16-17-19, be advised 8mm and 5/16 are same, and 19 and 3/4 are the same, it really depends on what you have to work on. Plus with all the Japanese hybrids, tis best to have all. the previous posts gave the straight scoop on tools, am full time auto mechanic....
