Old air compressor ID/info

Does anyone know of a website devoted to old compressors? I'm finding that a lot of compressor pump's don't have any marking's as to who built them. I had an old one dropped off here that I think is a Champion. The tank has Champion decal on it. The compressor had only a small metal tag that indicates the compressor as R 650 type S RV. The pump is pretty massive. Head, cylinder and crankcase are all seperate castings that are bolted together. The crankcase has a long tappered protrusion cast into the backside capped with a large brass hex-nut. Appears to have been painted gray or light green at one time. Unit has two cylinders and is marked for clock-wise rotation on the fly wheel/pulley.

Light green is a Champion color. The large brass nut also indicates it is a Champion as well. Is the model designation on a small curved metal tag that is screwed to the back cover, just above the "protrusion"? A lot of Champion pumps model designations also begin with "R" as in R15,R30,R70 etc. The protrusion sounds like a cover for a centrifugal unloader to me. All Champions I have worked on have been fairly new, so I haven't seen any with a separate cylinder and head arrangement. Must be pretty old. Sounds like a Champion to me. Should be worth building if you can get the parts, as they are high quality machines.

Thanks for your reply. The tank I got with old compressor was made in St. Louis, Mo. by what appears to be The Control Corp. Steamship and Barge builders.(or so it claims) Big horizontal tank, eighty gallons. The compressor has another number stamped into a raised tag that is cast into the crankcase on the exhaust side. The numbers mentioned in my earlier post were in fact taken from a metal tag attached to a bolt at the rear of the crankcase. This old dog does not have an oil level sight glass. Crankcase drain is on the exhaust side. Filler is on intake side. The air intake is odd in that it is low and appears to feed into the cylinder assembly instead of the head??
