Prepration for Painting

I've completely striped all the paint (paint remover, pressure washer and sand blasting) from my '52 Super A. I want to begin painting it but I am baffled by the fact that each joint (valve cover, head gasket area, pto and hydrolic valve joints) and each plug (pto drain plug, trans. drain plug and plug on the steering gear plug) seem to be leaking. Now, I don't mean a severe leak, but I clean these areas with a solvent and an oil stain begins to spread from these joints overnight.
So, what do I do? Clean these areas and get painting?
Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so how did you deal with it?
Hope someone can be of help.
Thanks, David Stubbs

I asked a guy what was the best way to start resoring a tractor and paint it. He said the first thing you had to do was to stop all the leaks. I took one look at my favorite oil encrusted SC Case and decided it looked ok to me! I dont see how you can stop the weeping unless the joint is taken apart, cleaned and new gasketing applied. I am watching these responses too, I hope there is another way :(

Pull the plug, and apply oil and gas resistant pipe thread sealant on the threads of the plug.
Works great, I had the same problem with my tractor, and this takes care of it. Permatex makes some, as well as other brands.

Roger,
Thanks for the tip about using gas and oil resistant tape.
My question though, is more about the oily areas that form around each joint (even though I have drained the engine oil, transmission oil and hydraulic fluid) and how to deal with them prior to painting. I've put way too much work and time into trying to prepare the tractor for painting to risk painting over an oily surface.
Surely someone else has striped their tractor down to bare metal and has had to deal with this phenomonon.
Hope so, David Stubbs

I'd sure be interested in the answer also. I'm about to paint the rear sides and bottom of my JD A, and the gaskets leak. Up until now, I was taking parts off and painting them individually, but I can't take apart the back end, I don't think. Would tightning the bolts stop the leaks? How about some kind of degreasing solvent that would penetrate the surface of the gasket material? I don't the answer, just guessing.
