Kohler muffler - ouch!

Just priced a new muffler for a 22 hp verticle Kohler engine from a lawn mower. $150 to $200 depending on where I go. That would be a lot of tractor parts for my Farmall H restoration or some good tools. Sounds fine to me, but momma thinks its a bit loud. (It's actually shot - probably no baffles left). Seems like its time to improvise. Outside looks sound and could use the headers from the original and ?? Anyone gone here before, or should I just quit grumbling, pay the fee, and get on with my tractor?

Made a nice one once for my 18 hp one lunger. It would detonate EVERY TIME after shutdown.Well,that stock thing didn't last.I used 4in. sch 20 SS pipe and put in 3 baffles. Louder than stock but okay to use for mowing. Mguy.

I put a kohler into a Case 646 backhoe and had no room for the muffler so I just used 3/4" pipe, elbows and unions to route it to a muffler I picked up from a engine shop for $15 (was a used one from a kohler) I welded the pipe to the muffler and plugged the other hole and it works like a charm. for another 20 hp Kohler repower on a Allis mower I used a pipe out to each side (with T's to connect the 2 pipes to help equalize pressure) and put a muffler up each side with rain caps, spent around $60 and makes the old mower look good, after 8 years still no problem. I have seen "homemade" mufflers work too. Saw a good descripion in a magazine called "Farm show" years ago

I have a muffler you can have if it will work for you and you will pay the shipping. It has two inlets and one outlet. Let me know the size of the inlets and the spacing. This is off an Onan but who knows, it might just work. Ed

Hey guys, wait just a minute. Am I the only one from the sixties here? Find out what size the threads are, for example, 1/2",3/4",1", etc. screw in a piece of pipe, put an elbow on the end, then go up with either a small muffler or a nifty piece of straight pipe or maybe even a little piece of chrome pipe for that custom look and tell the little missus to go do the dishes and you'll mow the freaking yard. This will either get you no supper or the chance to go to the brand new mower store and get that Y26 4-wheel drive zero turning radius 84 inch cut air conditioned mower with air horns and chrome rims that you think your neighbors would salivate over if they could have one. Either way it's a no lose situatiion for you. Remember I'm pulling for you, cause we're all in this together. Allen

If the CV22 is like my Kohler engines. The block is not tapped to accept pipe fittings like some old Briggs that I have. The exhaust header is held in place by two bolts much like a cars manifold.

Actually, your problem may be that Kohler may not have supplied the muffler. Many mower manufacturers design and provide their own mufflers, it depends on which way they orient the engine, etc.

The one you describe sounds just like the one on my 25 horse vert shaft Kohler on a Great Dane mower, so I suppose it could be a Kohler part.

You need to find out if its standard Kohler or mower specific.

Check with a local muffler shop - they may have a muffler of similar dimmensions that'll fit.

Thanks guys. Model number is CV-22 which is a verticle shaft twin cylinder commercial engine. I looked at eBay and did a quick Google search for Kohler parts but never found anything in less than 3 digits for price. Slowpoke, I like your suggestion. This muffler is round, 12 to 15 inches long has a header from each cylinder going into the opposite ends of the muffler. Muffler is horizontal with output from one end. It has mounting brackets welded to cannister somewhat like you discribed. Looks like I may waste a day in my shop fooling with this, but its supposed to rain this weekend so I can't paint Farmall parts anyway. With your encouragement, I think I can cut the cannister open, and hopefully fabricate a heavier duty set of baffles or what ever I find inside in pieces and mig weld it back together. At my age there isn't much left as exciting as beating the rap on a $200 part that should have been designed to use something stock and cheaper. I'll let you know if I spend a day and then spend $200 later.

.
You can go to the link below and select Kohler in the Search In box and type in CV22 Muffler in the Find box. RCPW is just about the cheapest place I have found that has just about everything stock for just about any small 4 stroke engine.

If you will give me the part number you need, I will see what I can sell it to you for. I got on RCPW's website and compared a muffler price and they were 5% above retail price on the one I checked. If I can help, eamil me what you are looking for and I will see what I can do for you.One I looked at was the 24 068 31, retail at 157.36, they had 166.something listed. Let me know if I can help.

Ouch....

I like RPCW a lot. For like I say they have just about everything that you can think of for small engines, lawn mowers/tractors and snow blowers.

I do a lot of LawnBoy repairs and restoring for people and 75% of the parts I need come from them.

A friend has an older 22hp Kohler twin that had original long verticle mufflers. Someone changed the exhaust to horizontal with a pipe elbow and used mufflers about 4" in diam. and 4" long with a flat end. These cheap ones ($7) were breaking at the mounting ring and flopping around, so I cut a 1" black iron pipe coupling in half and welded one piece to each (new) muffler. No more breaks, but now the outer ends blow out with age. I've been thinking about making some out of heaver metal. They're simple inside with a perforated, open end pipe 3/4 the length of the muffler that's welded to the mounting plate. The outer end plate has a series of 1/8 holes in front of the open end pipe.
If yours are bad, you don't have much to loose by cutting them open, measuring and making a replacement out of heavier material.

In my young and stupid days, we use to run our cars with straight pipes or glasspacks. To mellow out the sound for around town, we would put some loosely packed, coarse steel wool in the tailpipe and hold it in with a nail through the pipe. It would reduce the sound and some power but it was cheap. Never tried it on a lawn mower though.

What is the model number of your engine? Having that may help with finding a cheaper source.
