i sold my pc3-4 weeks ago had an older one with windows 98. i have a new one with XP. this site looks a lot different on opening page than before. is it because of the new windows XP, or did they redo it while i was away. also i've changed location of my computer, it is now plugged in the same circuit as my stereo radio. when the computer is on you can't hear the radio because of the noise/static. any suggestions? sorry for long post. thanks in advance.

Not being smart here, believe me. We had one of what you have now, and don't worry about the noise, you won't have that *^&^^%$$&&*& compaq long enough to worry about it. Sorry to rain on your parade, but we got burned too. Got a Gateway now and haven't had a nickels worth of trouble with it. Just a thought.

The computers actual case might also be a source of your noise. The FCC has a rule that all cases must meet certain criteria on RF interferance. In these days of cheap computers and even cheaper cases, who knows what RF a PC is leaking. This is even more problematic with moded cases with windows or even all plexiglass cases. You could try and apply a copper foil to the case to reduce this radiation of RF. The Government requires that any computer that is used for classified material be TEMPEST certified. You should see these things. They even have a woven copper strip that seals the joints. Very expensive.

We have four computers here.
Two with Windows XP
One with Windows 98
One with Windows 95. Was running 98 but it crashed big time and I just the placed the old hard drive into the one that crashed.

If the kids wants to crash a computer. They can crash the 95 and 98. For they are easy to get back up and running.

The Graphics on the XP's are different. They seem to be easier on the eyes. Both computers are using a higher quailty video card along with a better quailty modem.

As Tech4 stated. The electronic's may be causing your problems. Try moving the computer if possible or a differant plug and/or EMF filter surge protector. Also if you can connect an externel antenna to your stereo it may help cut the interference. For the house wiring can and does act as an antenna to a lot of stereo these days.

I don't think there has been any radical changes to the site. You probably are seeing differences because your new computer has different video and browser settings than the old computer. On the noise and static that is quite common on AM radio especially when near a computer. Both the monitor and CPU unit put out a lot of spurious emissions because of all the high speed electronic circuits in both. Sometimes a EMF filter in the power line or surge protector helps but not much. I had to move my radio about 3 to 4 feet away from my computer to get fair results on strong stations. I suspect you will have to relocate radio or computer if you want to use both.

Besides the CPU creating EMF, the cooling fans will cause noise on a radio. A newer Pentium machine will have a decent sized fan on the power supply and one or more fans to keep the processor cool. As other folks said, move either the radio or the computer a couple of feet and see if it make a differance. Otherwise get a decent EMF line conditioner to cut the racket on the line.

thanks for quick replies about the computer/radio noise. i have moved the computer to a different circuit, helped some, the radio has an external antenna wire and i moved it some and it helped a little. i will try to get a filter that you suggested. thanks again for your help. the 17 in. screen is a lot better than the old 15 in. i was using.
