Use dialup service. Phone line plugs into the computer, computer has another jack to use for phone. My computer and dialup work OK, but the jack on the computer for the phone is dead. Phone works fine at another jack on the house, no phone works from the computer jack. Replaced the phone cord from the computer, still no work. Happened after power outage and improper computer shutdown. Is it likely to be a software problem or hardware problem? Computer new in 1999, Windows 98. Dread having to get newer version of Windows.

Thanks for taking the time to post to try to help. Before I posted, I had decided to get a 3-way coupler to further test the system, just had not had time to do so. My phone at the computer has a LED that lights up when the phone line is in use and it is helpful so that I do not try to dialup on someone's conversation. So I bought the 279-447 coupler at Radio Shack. All is working well now. Bob was right. Cheapest solution for me also.

Bus Driver. Do exactly what Bob says to do. He's the only person who knows what's he talking about. Sorry guys. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a splitter at your wall jack (one side gong to a analog phone and the other going to the PC modem).

The length of the cable has absolutely no bearing on anything. You already have unsheilded and ungrounded phone line of some unknown length running from your customer interface box right? So an extra 10 or 15ft wont make any difference. Folks are always talking about what's outside the wall but never realize the massive interference they get from the cables inside the wall. I guess if they can't see it then it must be alright.

Do not install software and don't replace your modem if it's working. The "phone" jack on the back of the modem is your "splitter" and it stopped working. So get ya new one and install it at the wall jack side.

BTW. I have 14 years experience with this stuff and I think you did an pretty good job explaining your problem.

Are you sure that you are plugged into the line jack for the line and phone jack for the phone ? In some modems the 2 jacks are just parallel and in others a relay breaks the circuit when the modem is active. Usually a spike blows the modem and the phone still works which you have the opposite. Also look at the little pins inside the jack and make sure they are not touching or broken.

Yep, the first place I'd look is at the female jack on the 'puter. At work, where the machines are moved around, I've found the wires have been shorted to one another or otherwise out of position (I think this is because it's often awkward to reach the receptacle in back and set the male plug in square).
Like others have posted, I too am not comfortable with the RESTORE or reloading winders regardless of version. I usually bite the bullet and take it into the local "guru's" have have them fix it.
Not much help, I know, but that's my $.02 worth.

This is why internal modems are a Bad Idea. You're lucky that it only zapped your modem and not your motherboard. I prefer an external modem along with a phone line surge protector; that way any spikes coming down the phone line are kept completely out of the computer.

ok, Im a dialup internet tech by trade MORE THAN LIKELY that jack is fried on the modem. if the modem still dials up, then you can continue to use it.

I WOULD NOT advise splitting it at the wall, splitters, long cords and machines such as faxes can create "noise" on the line and DRASTICLY affect dialup speed and quality

I have dial up, and also by neccessity a long cord between the wall jack and the computer. There's also a atand-alone answering machine plugged in between the wall jack and the computer. Would I see noticeably faster computer operation if I put the answering machine on a different phone/wall jack and moved my computer desk so that I could use a much shorter(probably 4-5ft shorter) phone cord?

you might see better results, it would be worth a try.

Alot of the time when people are having connection problems its due to long phone cords, and the javk split for other devices....

Ron,

I'm on DSL here at the house, but at the farm I have dialup, about 3 miles from the dial house, as the crow flies, somewhat farther than that as the lines run.

I typically connect at 45K to 50K at the farm. During a period when it was more common to connect at the lower end of the speed range, I tried unplugging my desk phone from the jack on the modem, and there was little, if any change. I now have my phone plugged into the a splitter, or dual jack at the phone jack, and have also tried plugging the computer only in, with no change in modem connect speed.

I'm not saying there would never be an improvement with a shorter modem cord, or the not using a dual jack, but with good quality phone cords, the difference should be minimal. It would certainly be worth a try, though, to move your computer temporarily closer to the phone jack, and connect it with a short cord to see if there would be an improvement.

If the modem dials and connects OK, dont sweat it. As previously mentioned, get a splitter and use it at the wall phone jack. About 3.50 at radio shack or wally world. I wouldnt mess with it for the price of a splitter.

using insurance is a bad idea. Don't even call them about it. just a call is the same to them as putting in a claim. you will be put in a national database along with your house. ANYONE trying to get insurance for that house will pay extra because of your claim. Your insurance company will also penalize you with a higher bill.

Insurance is now for big ticker items your supposed to eat the small stuff. I know that is not what they said when they sold it to you, but that is how it is today.

Most likely, it is a damaged modem. Before I would do anything drastic, I would examine the connections on the modem very carefully for damage. Those silly little wires can sometimes go funny. If everything appears OK (try looking with a magnifying glass), then I'd remove the covers and look at the modem board, especially in the vicinity of the connectors - looking for burned traces on the board, or poorly connected wires at the board socket interface. If modem still works, I'd be inclined to plug phone in elsewhere and use the modem as is.

If you still have 9 or so CDs that came with the computer when new.

While the computer is on and no programs are running.

Put the System Restoration CD in the CDROM drive and reinstall the BVRP Phone tools in the Software section.

It may or may not solve your problem. But it is cheaper to try that first than buying a new Modem and having a tech look at it.

The LAST THING you'd want to do here is a software restore.

He said his dialup modem is working. The problem he is having is a HARWARE PROBLEM. Quite simply, the jolt of lightning fried a tiny fuse, or more likely simply toasted a tiny foil on the printed circuit board in the modem which connects the line input jack to the phone output jack. There is simply a straight-through electrical connection from the input jack to the output jack, and this has been fried.

There is NO SOFTWARE INVOLVED HERE!

Since the computer and modem are working, and the output jack to plug the phone into is simply a convenience item that is easily worked around by the simple splitter mentioned in my previous post, WHY RISK killing the computer over a non-problem????

Damn Bob I did not mean to Whizz in your oats.

I just know that after My phone line stopped working. I just had to re install the program that drove the phone tools.

And all I know is that my phone tools started working again after I did.

Les,

I didn't feel whizzed on. (Lord knows I have a wife and kids to do that)!

I just was trying to keep the guy from risking messing up Winders. Maybe it's just me, but I've had terrible luck with trying to do a "RESTORE" when windows gets weird. I always kill it worse while trying to fix it. It seems I wind up having to reformat the hard drive, and re-load Winders more often than not because it will screw itself up during the restore process.

I do not claim to be a Winders expert, and I have no idea of Bus Driver's Winders knowledge. I was just trying to save him from pulling a Bob and making things worse.

Was your dialup modem working to allow you to get on-line before you reinstalled the software, or was the modem down too?

Have a good one, Les!

Buy a $4.95 splitter at WallyWorld, and hook the phone cord and the modem cord into the splitter at the phone jack. As long as the modem keeps working, don't sweat replacing it!

You need a new modem. Probably a voltage spike right before power outage burnt her up.
