Media for sandblaster cabinet

I have a sandblaster cabinet and I'd like to find the right media for what I want to do. I'd like to clean metal just to get it ready for welding or painting. The only thing that I've used in it is crushed glass and leaves the metal with a rough, pitted finish. I'd like to leave metal shiny, but smooth.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a better media of am I just doing it wrong?

NEVER USE SILICA SAND IN A SANDBLASTER UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET SILICOSIS. WORSE THAN LUNG CANCER. CAUSED BY BREATHING DUSTS CONTAINING SILICA. NO TREATMENT JUST DEATH.

I work at a foundry and been blasting dies for 18 year with steel shot. The shot is a 120/220 grit blend I don�t know where you could get some, I�ll have to look at where we get it. It leaves a rough, pitted finish
But it is ready for paint. I have blasted my bike tank and fenders and just painted them �as is� they turn out smooth as glass. The blast room is 15�x 10� and has a 3� blasting hose that runs at 100 psi.. This drops the plant air 10psi when it�s turned on. For thin metal you have to get far a way to avoid heat build up (this thing will cut like a torch and warp metal). I have also blasted wheels (alu. and steel), car frames, fiberglass saddle bags you name it they all turn out like new when painted.

Go to home - do-it yourself builders supply, or masonry product supplier. Purcahse silica sand. 50lbs/$4.00 about. This sand's sharp
Or
Visit Great Lakes beach (Mich preffered) pick up, shovel up, scoop up from road way. Area ordinaces may have laws against beach sand removal. This sand's polished smooth & round by wind & water.

I know that Harbor Freight has some cheap junk, but they also have some things that are useful too. I personally like Fiberglass beads, but they have some other media that polishes metal.

True, TPtools seems to know more than anyone else, they make enough equipment.

Ground walnut shell will remove most surface crud/old paint, etc. without removing metal. It won't polish but it will leave the surface like it was as far as texture, safe on aluminum parts that are expensive.
