Log Splitter Fluid

Information needed: I am putting the finishing touches on a log splitter I have built; am using an 8hp engine and a Barnes 2-stage pump. My question is, "What fluid do I use? I have been told that hydraulic fluid is too heavy for the pump and I should use automatic transmission fluid. Any help getting the correct info will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi David,

Try a Case dealer for Hy-Tran. It's rated for gear/hydraulic use in tractors. About $5gal in 5gal pails.

just bought a used splitter with Barnes 2 stage the sticker on it recomends Dextron II.

ATF is to thin it is not intended for hydraulic use .I use medium #31 hydraulic oil'The only to go.

If you can find an oil dealer who handles the Mobile DTE25 it is well worth the added cost in preventing wear and foaming.

do not use atf,real hydraulic fluid has a higher heat index, remember atf is usally cooled with a raditator which log spliters DO NOT HAVE.
Most hydraulic oils (ORGANIC) are rated with a (AW)number 26 comparable with 10w motor oil viscosity to well over aw50 (sludge)
The style of pump ie rotory vane,piston and gear and the application dictate the viscosity used however aw 42 is a good grade for a gear 2 stage pump used moderately in temps around freezing to about 100 degrees.
Remember and is really critical that your tank is AT LEAST TWICE the capacity of you pump ie.if you pump does 5 gallons per a min then you should use a 10 gallon tank.

ps. atf is used usally because its cheaper and a worked log splitter (splitting elm or iron oak)can generate more heat than the 250 degrees atf is designed for and one reason your tank should be twice the size of your pump (heat sink/exchanger);-)

I have a commercially built 25 ton splitter with a Barnes 2 stage pump. Recommended fluid is ATF, (Dexron II). Joe
