You better not answer this here, or discuss it farther as it could be a health issue. I just got a pacemaker (ICU) and want to know if any of you have experince with running a dc welder. To avoid any problems please use my E-mail. If it is hidden...kpierce@frii.com....

I have Medtronic w/a shocker, was informed at the time of installation that I was DONE: electric welding, running engine tuneups, heavy lifting(possible muscle tear near the gizmo), no loitering in store electronic security arches, and carry the cell phone in the opposite side shirt pocket of the gizmo. It took a while to adjust to a new(different) life style but it didn't take very long to realize that I still did(do) have a life style, I hope yours works as good for you as mine does for me, Dale

I pulled this line from the carenotes of our hospitals Micromedex system. It's from the discharge sheet given to pacemaker users upon leaving the hospital.

"Avoid leaning into a car engine or doing welding. You may need to change your job if you do these things for a living."

sorry but your welding days are over. It is too serious to risk. Both my Dad and Uncle had pacemakers and the doc told them both "do not even get close to a welder in operation" Ask your doctor, he'll tell you.

Hi Ken,

I sure would ask your Doctor before welding.

They won't let pacemakers in MRI rooms because of the magnetic field so I would think the same would apply to welding as welding creates a strong magnetic field at times.

Let us know what the Doc says!

T-Bone, the MRI thing is the magnet will rip the pacemaker out of your chest, and the steel rods out of my back. (the Dr. told my wife to keep the cell phone away from her pacemaker.)It`s going to be fun trying to get on an airplane next week. kjm

Very good possibility it would be an issue, especially if you get buzzed, which does happen.I weld pretty much year round and its an every day occurance especially on damp rainy days. I get buzzed enough that I haven't replaced my watch battery in 7 years. Saving on watch batteries is one thing, going back to the hospital is quite another.

Probably not a problem, but I would SURE CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURER, AND DOCTOR! Get it in writing, and tell your wife where you put the paper!

Get it on paper? Do you think in todays age of lawsuits they will say "it is fine to use our machine with a pacemaker", get real, just check with the doc on what equipment you can use or what is not recommended and be careful.

I think he was referring to the manufacturer of the pacemaker.
