welding axel parts

Hi I discovered one of the axels on my Skid Stear needs repair, So I am looking for advise to what welding rod would work best with a ac buzz box on the axel shaft and the inside of the hub so I can machine them in a lathe Thanks Don

I have seen it done just to push it down the road.
Most heavy equipement axles skidders/skid steers/payloaders are designed to have some SPRING (torsional twist) so to take the edge off of shock loads to you diff. and trans.
yeah welding will put it back to gether but can not replace the one peice chariteristics of the forging/heat treatment of an original.
A good heavy equipement salvage yard is my first option if I was going to keep it.

Hi Don,

I'm not very optimistic on this repair as post heat tratment would be critical and need percisely controlled.

Most driven wheel vechiles will fail the axle on the opposite side after a new axle has been installed. This is because more stress moves to the old axle.

I would use 7018 and preheat and post heat and cool slow in lime or sand.
