The link is to Northern Tools. They have a bending jig for light mild steel I'm contemplating buying, as I have some "wrought iron" work to do this summer.

Anybody used it or have input?

It's on sale for $49 now. I made the mistake of buying it for $99 at Northern. They do look the same.

Very nice, John!

I've got a truss roof on my 24x48 garage, so no poles...

However, I'm going to do something similar. I had planned to make a stand out of some H beam with a bolt flange welded to each end. Bolt the bender to one end and sink four lead anchors in the floor and bolt the stand to that. Then when I'm done, I can unbolt it and stash it out of the way.

Looking at your pole mount, I wonder if I'm not overengineering it with too big a hunk of H beam. That stuff is HEAVY, do you think I could get away with some lighter stuff (I've got some thick-wall 3" square tubing) without running into problem when I'm horsing on the bender?

I also have the HF model, on sale down from $99 to $49 two years ago. I've used it to make 4" rings from 1x1/4 stock. To get that size, I used a cast iron pulley. Not the easiest to do because the ends can't be curved as there's no way to hold the stock end tight against the mandrel. Has to be finished by hand. I even made a 12" ring from 1/2 square tube. Just a tiny bit of a bend and move, bend and move. The bender also needs to be mounted securely to prevent twisting. I bolted mine to the end of a 4' length of square Kindorf tube so it can be placed in a heavy vice, with the tool resting on the vice. That way, I have a lever to pull against when making the bend with the handle. And it doesn't take up bench space when not in use.

Thanks! Sounds like it's more than rugged enough to do what I want then.

I'm thinking I'll get the benchtop model and mount it to a piece of heavy H beam I have, and then sink some lead anchors in the garage floor so I can bolt it down when I need it.

Will definitely look at Harbor Freight too, see if I can catch that deal on it.

Fawteen... They look identical to me. Go to the HF site and check the price. All the stuff I've seen on there ships for like $5.99 or so, lots less than others. Also are you planning on bolting the H beam flat on the floor? The bender needs to be chest high for easiest work. There's a lot of torque on that handle and it can't be done 12" off the floor.

Nope, I was gonna weld a plate on both ends of a piece of H beam about 32" long, bolt one end to the floor, bolt the bender to the other end. About workbench height.

The one that Northern has looks identical to one I bought from H. Freight last summer. It was on sale for $49.99. It works good, haven't had any problems.
