I have been thinking about using a Fox or other forage chopper to chip brush and small trees. Has anyone done that or seen one that someone has converted for that use? You could remove the head and make a chute to feed into. Would the knives take it or aren't they stong enough? Do think it would work or is it just a widow maker? Thanks

A Gehl forage chopper damned near killed my brother 5yrs ago. Grape vine caught his leg pulled him in. Lost leg including part of hip.
Suggest deep table on front, and easy shut off and/or disengagement control's. He's getting around. Neither of us will ever get over this. I was only feet away and didn't see it until to late.
Just days before 3yr old child right here in local town wanted to help daddy. When daddy turned around she was gone. Nobody saw it. Therorize she put branch in it with out letting go. That machine was commercail built.
I had nightmare three days before accident myself getting caught in that machine.

I've seen several in Farm Show magazine that guys have built. The main thing you have to do is slow down the feed rolls so it has time to take a small chip. Your also limited to soft wood up to maybe 3 inches. Might be safer to rent a wood chipper or try to find a good used one to buy.

I have a Papec Silo Filler that I have used to chop small stuff. Does a heck of a job on leaves and small leafy branches.Takes stuff up to the size of your thumb pretty well. Anything larger won't feed properly. A Fox with reel type knives MIGHT take more than my blower wheel knives will.I don't think the knives are the weak spot. The housings and the stationary knife/shear block seem to be what take the beating. The tin on a wood chipper is heavier than the tin on a corn chopper. While I am sure a corn chopper is engineered to tolerate the occasional stick or stone a constant diet of wood will wear one out in short order I fear.
