I have built myself a small trailor using new metal. Now getting ready to paint. I have read somewhere in an old auto refurbishing magazine that I would need to clean all metal up shinny and rust free before priming. The blued sort of finish on new steel I assume is to help keep it from rusting until sold? I have used a 4.5" ginder with both a wire brush and coarse sanding disc. These remove this blued surface very slowly. Do I really need to remove it since it is on there so well? I am not after a smooth shinny car finish. I am going to paint with a brush and regular hardware store metal primer, probably Rustoleumn. Please advise and thanks!

You do not need to remove the blueing. Just remove any rust that may be found.

For paint. Take a look at Sherman Williams Bond Plex. You will not need primer to use it. It has got to be the toughest paint that I have ever used and it will stick to any metal surface. It is the paint of choice for Indurstial Marine use.
