We bought an older B&D Valve refacer (model Cat#6305). It didn't come with a manual and we have a question is to why there is a 15 degree offset in the reading. Anyone have a manual or could answer a few setup questions? Thanks. 570-836-2711.

Rich ,

Many of the later grinders had a wheel with a 15 deg angle in the face . The older B&D would not do 15 deg valves for intakes on international engines.

I have a valve refacer that has a similar setup. Whan you set it to 0 degrees to use the diamond tip to true up the stone, the stone is trued at an angle, although I'm not sure WHAT angle. When you remove the wheel truing device, and set it back to 45 degrees, for instance, the interaction between the angle of the face of the grinding wheel and the angle the valve chuck runs at produce the correct 45 degree angle on the valve face.

I'm not sure why some of these units have the grinding wheel faced at such an angle, but I suspect the interaction between the angled stone and the valve face produces a better finish, possibly because of less vibration or "chatter".

If you are interested, I will post a picture of how mine is set up. (I believe it is a KO LEE, but I'll have to check and see when I get to the shop).

There were a few intake valves at 15 & 20 deg. angles. I doubt if you can find a manual. Goodson might have stones. Earl

I have recently purchased stones for my Black and Decker from my local NAPA dealer, he ordered them through Goodson. It was a fairly long period to wait between when it was ordered, and when it arrived, seems they waited until there were several orders before they set up to produce the particular stone that my grinder needed. You may want to keep this in mind, and order your stones BEFORE you need them.

Try your local NAPA Auto Parts Store. They will most likely either have it or be able to get it for you.

geo. h,

They come up on ebay from time to time.

A wheel dressing unit for a Sioux seat grinder would probably work, too.

(You did mean for the SEAT Grinder, rather than the valve refacer, correct?)
