I guess a computer could be a tool for finding info on tractors, i need info on a computer. Almost every time i try to look up something, just as it starts to show the page it flops up this sign that says, THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION AND WILL BE SHUT DOWN. Then it freezes up and you have to restart the computer. Anyone know what has happened or what to do to fix it short of buying a new one. Any help is appreciated, thanks Ken.

Hi Ken,

I switched to XP-home at the first of the year. Gees do I like it as it has a restore feature. If mine glitchs now, I just restore the puter to a mark date where it was running good. Takes about 5 minutes to restore and all my headaches are gone. Load a bad program, 5 minutes it's gone with no trace providing you do a restore mark before installing the program.

I don't even use my Win98 any more. Something else that increased my page load time. I'm running a 56k V92 dial-up but I'm 30miles out of town and only get 26.4k sometimes 28.6k at the most, so it was very noticeable. I don't know if XP is responsible for the speed and/or new puter. Probably a little of both.

Windows 98 is a good product and is the operating system of choice for the library where I work. I'm still running Windows 95b and rarely have any problems from it.

I willing to bet that you are using Internet Explorer rather than another browser. I think that is your problem. Giving a flash error when trying to load those nice pop up windows for you.

After switching from IE to Netscape 4.79 several years ago I got away from a lot of my problems. The problem for me is that I don't like the newer Netscape versions, and they won't be coming out with anymore from what I read.

There are some things you should do on a regular basis. I'm providing a link below to a site that gives the common basics. I think the fourth post is the one you need to read. It tells about dumping cookies, etc.

If you are using IE, you probably need to run Ad-aware &/or Spybot daily. Netscape rarely loads any new spyware, but my daughter and SIL's IE loads it continually as a person browses. A good reason for me to stick with NetS. I also don't get as many pop up ads.

I wouldn't get rid of your machine if I were you. Just some maintainence should do the trick.

Get a copy of Norton SystemWorks Professional and use it to clean up the registry. The web cleanup utility and the antivirus work great also. The neighbors computer was doing the same as yours so I used Norton on it. It took Norton 6 hours to perform all of the cleanup chores. They did not want a reload of their 98 and it was the only way to save the files and cleanup the system.

I defrag every week and disk clean up to.
If you have not done this it could take all day.
Also if you havent you might consider reformating hard drive and reinstalling windows.

Ken
You might try one more thing. When you get the illegal op message, click on the "details" button. It should tell you some info about the app that is causing the error. My Win 98 kept giving me that message, and it was always a "flash" error.so I went to the Macromedia site and downloaded "flash" player again and that fixed it.Lately I've been occasionally getting the message again, but it's not a "flash" error and only happens after the computer has been on a long time,so maybe it's from heat build-up.Hope this helps.

Try defragmatizing the hard drive. There should be a spot to run that under my computor. Just have to shut off the screen saver before you start.

Before you junk your computer, you might go to the Microsoft website and see if there are updates for your software. I have Windows 98, and other than being a MS product it works fine. If you have an older computer, your harddrive might be full. You will need about 20% 'headspace' for it to work right.

I would try clean out everything properly and start over, reinstal windows 95 etc. Then try it with a mimimum of progams, downloads etc. and see if it works. Your computer is a two part machine -hardware and software. I'm no expert but would assume that your computor hardware ( the mechanical aspect is ok. That means you are having the problem with your software. Sometimes the software mixes itself up. By cleaning out as much as you can the problem may get cleaned out or if not you have narrowed down where it could be.

There are several lengthy answeres to the question. I would check for a virus first, then disc scan in dos, then defrag the system. You might check the system performance and see if it might be low. Like I sez everyone has their own opinion to the problem. Rather than shut down, can you ctl, alt, del to get out of the freeze ups.

Windows 95? I don't know what to do about it, but I used to have two Win95 computers with the hard drive and memory maxed out. Got that message usually when I was in some critical operation that I did not want to repeat. Obviously I had to repeat it. No sarcasm intended, but if it is Windows 95, you need an updated computer with a newer version of Windows, I have XP.

It's a windows 98, old but it was doing all i was fast enough for, but i guess it's time to upgrade. The control del. will sometimes get out but not always. My wife said the washing machine just came unglued so i guess my computer will have to wait a while, she thinks clean clothes are more important than tractor stuff anyway. I'll try those suggestions, thanks Ken.

I am including a bit more information in hopes of helping you with your computor software problem.

My daughter had 95 software that came with her computor. She upgraded this computor with 2000 software. She was advised not to go with 98 software as it had a lot of extras as a sales package that year. She was told that 2000 software wouldn't tax her computor as much. So she tried the 2000 and it now works fine.

Win98 is a fine OS (for a Windows), as long as you have the SE version and get the updates from Microsoft. How long has it been since your copy was installed? Installing and uninstalling programs over the years tends to foul up older OSes. Viruses and spyware do the same.

Back up your data, reformat the hard drive, and installed Windows 98se. Get everything on Windows Update for it, and try to get the latest (or last) Win98 drivers for your computer's devices. Make sure any of your old programs you put back on aren't too old and are compatible with 98.

99% of computers folks throw out for "not working" just need a reformat/reinstall. I've done several a day recently.
