Radiator question

My car radiator has been going up in temperature by 20 to 25 degrees when I idle in traffic lately. I removed the radiator cap last night and there's brown gunk on the cap and around the inside of the entrance to the radiator.

I really havn't had this on my 1990 Dodge truck. The car is a 2002 Pontiac and uses Dexcool coolent. Any ideas on the brown sludge or the temp rise? Thanks.

Are you losing any coolant?? GM has had a lot of woes with this dex-cool. Also intake manifold gaskets depending on the engine. Dex-cool Seems to gel sometimes. You might flush the system, have it pressure checked and refill with the pink stuff. That 5 yr coolant is crap, but you cant mix it. A guy needs to change it frequently. I have been reading, it seems there are some trying to get a lawsuit started against GM for this problem. If you do a search on dex-cool problems you will get a lot of reading material. Also, check and be sure the fans are coming on. However, I think it is common that they run somewhat hotter in traffic. I dont think 15 deg is that much to be concerned about. These generally run 195ish anyhow. My last 2 buicks got hot in traffic.

My chevy luminia started the same way. Then i started getting oil in my antifreeze jug. It ended up being the intake manifold gaskets. The GM dealership that fixed it for ONLY 538.00 said that they dont use Dex Cool anymore. They put in a new gold colored antifreeze. Said it was better than Dex Cool.
