Would someone please comment on comparing the Ford 7.3 diesel to the newest Ford 6.0 diesel? Will the newer diesels pull as well as the diesel it replaced? Thanks for your time and consideration in these questions.

Hi Tony, i don't think these many issues are abnormal given the comlexity of vehicles now days. Ford seems to issue a bulletin every time an engineer stubs his toe. The 6.0 may work well 'on the road' after they get a few bugs worked out. I have not driven one. I would be surprised if it has low end grunt of the 7.3. Usually small engines rely on more RPM and waiting for turbo boost in this case, "there is no substitute for cubic inches". This may show on the farm. Fuel mileage should be better than the 7.3.

There have been several 6.0's around here have broken crankshafts. All of the ones that broke crankshafts were pulling trailers.

I bought a 2003 F350 in may with the 6.0 engine, had a 2001 F350 with 7.3 before, the 6.0 is a much stonger better pulling engine then the 7.3 was, the tranny on the 6.0 seems to be much stronger for pulling then the old one, Pulled a 15,000 lb trailer from Minnesota to Dallas and back in august got 12 mpg. Liked the truck so much just bought the wife an excusion with the 6.0 diesel

Been a rumor floating around ford has bought alot of the 6.0l engines back and replaced them with new 6.0. Have not heard what the failure is but seems costly one. To replace the engine the cab has to be pulled. Look at it this way, look how many 7.3 are out there turbo or non. The have been tryed and tested. The 6.0 is a new engine that in time will have all the bugs worked out. This seems true with all new eninges. Take the the 87 and newer chevy fuel injected engines. They finally fixed the oil problem in them by the early 90's. They sure loved to burn oil because of valve stem seals.

I have test drove the new 6.0L and I guess they will pull the same as the 7.3L. My biggest concern is how long will the engine hold up?To match the 7.3L hp they would have to use more fuel and rpms in the 6.0L.I know Ford has had some problems with the new motors.Ill stay with 97 F350 4x4 with 7.3L turbo diesel. The truck pulls everything I need to pull.Just my .02$

Thanks for your comment, I've got a 2001 with the 7.3. It does a good job and I am well pleased just interested in a new truck. Tony

Hi Tony,

From the RV forums and the dieselstop.com forums the 6.0 is getting slightly better fuel mileage and no complaints on power.

In early Jan 04 there was 200 engines that were recalled due to a bad main bearing problem. A machine had a missed finishing the bearing journal. From the reports Ford got the idle and oil leak problems fixed in mid 2003.

Everyone seams to like the 5spd auto tho.

Thanks T Bone, your comments are basically what everyone else has said. When I'm not pulling, I wish mine would shift another time and drop some rpm's. I am very curious to know what the life expectancy is of the 6.0. Do you know anyone who has put alot of miles on a 6.0??

Thank you, Tony
