Front-tine tiller with two different speeds? What

Hey, y'all.
I'm repairing a front-tine tiller that was given to me. (It's a Turfmaster with a 5hp or so Briggs.) Anyway, I pulled the motor off to replace the belts and check the pulleys. I can't quite figure out why it has two sets of drives. The crank has a big pulley that is belted to another big pulley and a tensioning idler. That seems normal to me. But then there's a second driven shaft (also vertical) off to the side of the crank. It has a small pulley that is also belted to another pulley with its own tensioning idler pulley. The pulleys powered off the crank are tensioned when you grip the handle. The second set is tensioned when you throw a lever on the plate between the handlebars. Looks like the crank gets about 1.5:1 ratio and the second drive gets 1:1. Can y'all explain what this is? Just a two-speed box, or is it something different? Thanks in advance for the help,

Darren

I will speculate it is a 2 sp forward. Reverse on a front tine tiller is uncontrol-able. Tines pull it for you. Maybe however one pulley is to drive the wheels???

Sounds like reverse to me. The little shaft is the end of the camshaft and it runs 1/2 speed and in reverse of the main shaft.

Russell,
Thanks. I had wondered about that. Is reverse really useful on a front-tine tiller? Is reverse for when you get into roots or something? I think the tiller we had when I was a kid just had one forward speed and no reverse.

If that is a reverse, the only reason I can see using it is if you are tilling a plot and come up to a fence or wall and need to back-up to turn the machine around. I personally have never seen a reverse on a front-tine tiller and it might be dangerous to operate.

I have two of them. One 8 hp sears with two speeds forward and one reverse and a 5 hp wards with 1 speed forward and one reverse. The reverse could be dangerous I suppose but it sure saves the my back when I want to back up the machine from the fence or all the way across the patch. The reverse will not stay engaged unless your hand is pulling the lever to engage it. That way when you fall down in the soft dirt it will stop. I know the reverse one's have been around a long time. The first new tiller I bought in 1971, a Gambles 8 hp had a reverse.

I would hate to operate one of the bigger front tiners without reverse.
