removing surface rust

My square developed a light coat of surface rust over the winter in the shop. What is the best way to remove it without hurting marks? Anything I can spray on it? I hate to buff it on the emery. Thanks.

Try a process called electrolytic rust removal. It's relatively easy, using a bath, anode, and a battery charger. It's easier to do than explain. Use a Google search for "electrolytic rust removal" and you'll find a lot of descriptions and diagrams.

Try Ospho, It will leave a dark coating but that can be cleaned off.
