I figured out the beam calculations for your hoist. The 4x4 beam will hold 3500lbs, and the 6x6 will hold 11,000lbs with the web vertical like an "I". This is with load in the center of a 10ft span with a 1.5 safety factor already calculated in. HTH

Bill, thanks so much for your help! I decided to go with the 6X6. You look at the engine hoists from china that are rated for 2 tons, they are made from pretty thin box steel, I figured that the 6X6 should do the trick. I don't trust much to chance so I exercise a great deal of caution where accidents can happen. Thanks again for your help.
