I am doing some restoration work on my tractor and have taken an interest in a parts washer. I used to work in a fab shop that did a lot of machining and we just had a large metal tank with a shelve on the side made of expanded metal with a return tray mounted underneath to catch the solvent and flow it back into the tank. Parts were placed in heavy screen baskets and allow to soak. Seemed to work well. I have looked at a couple of washers at the tool suppliers. One has a small barrel on the bottom of a tank with the pump and goose neck and it is made in the States, $400 (Canadian). The other is a Chinese model at half the price, $200 at one store and $169 at another (Canadian). I have seen in the archives that some folks think the Chinese model is crap. The pump wears out fast. So my choices are, make up a tank similar to the one at work, US model, or Chinese model.

As far as solvents go, I was looking into the citrus based solvent, d-Limonene from Florida Chemical. Anybody ever use it? If not any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A company called Ryder Chemicals here in Canada makes a citrus based product called Enviro. It is very good stuff and smells like oranges. It will takes asphalt off paving rakes if you let it soak overnight. We used to use it to clean waxy buildup out of air compressor radiators and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. It is tough on paint though, and death for plastics. I would use some sort of vent too, as it tends to give you a hint-of-mint effect on your breath. Gloves are recommended as it will turn your hands wrinkly if you dip them in it. It is advertised as bio-degradable, but I doubt the grease and oil you will get in it is. We used to pay about $150 for a 5 gallon pail. It will degrease anything. You can mix it with water too.

Paul, if you are interested send me an e-mail, and I will send you some information on a micro-emulsion that I use in my parts washer. Don't need the solvent, works real well and is not so hard on your skin, and won't burn. Dave

Hey Dave,

That "special emulsion" doesn't happen to start out as corn mash, does it?
