How often are 8 point bolts and nuts used? What are these bolts and nuts used on? I see a lot of socket sets that include these sockets in the set. Is it neccessary that I buy a complete set of 8 point sockets? Thanks for any responce!!!!!

The 8 points that you are refering to are for smaller bolts requiring higher torque values. They have also been used as an anti-theft device since most midnight auto salvagers don't carry that type of tool. They aren't for 4 sided square bolts and nuts but thaat doesn't mean they couldn't be used for that.

The 8 point sockets are used on square bolts and nuts as well as on pipe plugs that have the raised square head on them. Unless your working on antique machines and are doing them back with origional type fasteners your not gonna find much use for them except on the pipe plugs.

I have an evenrude 40 horse that has 12 point bolts on the connecting rod caps. First time I ever saw them and thought they may be some kind of specialty fastener. Took a minute to figure out what to use to remove them.

Aren't most sockets 12-point? Or did you mean to type 8-point? Just curious.

Nope they are 12 point I think. At least some OMC motors have them on the rods. They sort of look like the head was cast in a TORX socket.
