Anyone have info on good or bad exhaust brakes for the powerstroke? I have a 2001 F-450 with a 4 yard dumpbox and tow my J.D. 350C's and 450C in the mountains, so a little extra braking would be nice. I have used a PAC brake on a Dodge and seems to work well. BD Brake claims their brake is the best for the powersroke. (of course they would say that) Just looking for opinions from those who have them or know about them. Thanks in advance.

Dad's got a PAC Brake exhaust brake on his C6500 service truck which has a 3116 CAT in it. It has an air cylinder operating the brake valve that's actuated when the throttle closes all the way and makes a switch opening a solenoid valve to put air on the cylinder. On a basic electric and mechanical setup like this one makers design should be just as good as anothers since all it is is a butterfly valve in the exhaust. If they are using stainless in the right places and it appears to be a good design then mechanically any one of them ought to be OK. The big difference is gonna be in how they are actuated. If they are being electronically controlled by the trucks computer then I'd pay close attention to how they interface with it and take it from there. Like everything else the more complicated the setup the more problems your liable to see with it over time. Just my .02

Some time back Ebrakes for powerstrokes were for sale on Ebay for around $190- I think they were PacBrake brand. Seems like the seller was a business in Texas. I got the impression they were giving up being a dealer for them. There is one brand especially for AT's, the brake is just ahead of the muffler to reduce the sudden jolt to the AT. All Ebrakes will work well with manual trannys but none of them work well at low rpm's. Some of the larger Ebrakes require stronger valve springs in order to keep the valves from floating. You'll find nearly all the brands on the net. Visit the RV'ing forums and search for this topic, you'll find numerous reviews of them.
